Design Strategies:
ADDIE Model
ADDIE stands for Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. Each phase of the model offers an opportunity for iterations and changes before moving to the next one.
- Analysis — collects information and profile target learners, and understanding their needs and expectations. Analysis drives design and the development process.
- Design— set objectives, chooses appropriate media and delivery methods.
- Development — to develop the course materials.
- Implementation — delivered to the learners, and its impact is monitored.
- Evaluation — collaborates with the learner and evaluates the impact of the course based on learner feedback, surveys, and even analytics.
Once the evaluation is complete, the results are converted into actionable improvements. The whole ADDIE process is repeated.
Bloom’s Taxonomy
Learning objectives are at the very core of the instructional design process. Bloom’s Taxonomy is divided into six categories, each representing a cognitive skill level. Each category is associated with a set of verbs or cognitive processes that describe what learners should be capable of doing. Bloom identified three domains of learning: Cognitive (mental), Affective (emotional), and Psychomotor (physical). It is essential to have clear learning objectives in designing e-Learning courses design, the six cognitive skill levels:
- Remembering— examples, lectures, videos, visuals
- Understanding— basic quiz questions (multiple choice, matching, etc.)
- Applying— practical exercises, role-playing games, simulations
- Analyzing— problem-solving questions, case studies
- Evaluating— case studies, critiques, appraisals
- Creating—projects, complex quiz questions (drag and drop, free response, etc.)
Certain activities can be used for more than one skill level; it all depends on how you design your course. And this is only the beginning—there are many more activities that you can design to help your learners achieve each of these cognitive skill levels.
ARCS Model of Motivation
It is an instructional model developed by John Keller, and focuses on motivation. There are four components of ARCS model, and stands for Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction.
- Attention — It refers to the learners’ interest. It is critical to get and hold the learners’ interests and attention.
- Relevance — The learning process should show the usefulness of the content so that learners can bridge the gap between content and the real world.
- Confidence — This component focuses on developing success expectation among learners, and success expectation allows learners to control their learning processes. There is a correlation between confidence level and success expectation. That’s why providing estimation of probability of the success to learners is important.
- Satisfaction — There is direct relation between motivation and satisfaction. Learners should be satisfied of what they achieved during the learning process.
Gagnés Nine Events of Instruction
“ Essential to Gagne's ideas of instruction are what he calls "conditions of learning." Gagnés breaks these down into internal and external conditions. The internal conditions deal with previously learned capabilities of the learner. Or in other words, what the learner knows prior to the instruction. The external conditions deal with the stimuli (a purely behaviorist term) that is presented externally to the learner. For example, what instruction is provided to the learner.” (Cory, 1996) Gagné's most essential ingredients of teaching are:
- presenting the knowledge or demonstrating the skill
- providing practice with feedback
- providing learner guidance
These elements have to be designed differently according to the type of learning level (learning goal) to be achieved. For Gagné, instructional design means to first identify the goal (a learning outcome) and then construct the learning hierarchy, i.e. do a task analysis of skills needed to perform a measurable activity that demonstrates a learning goal.
1. Gain attention of the students— with stimuli that catch and engage their brain (novel ideas or thought-provoking question, etc.)
2. Inform students of the objectives — Establish the expected outcomes and criteria for measuring achievement.
3. Stimulate recall of prior learning — Leverage existing knowledge before introducing new knowledge and build on it.
4. Present the content — Deliver the content in easily consumable chunks.
5. Provide learner guidance — Guide them with examples, case studies, and other instructional support to supplement the content.
6. Elicit performance — Engage them with different activities that recall, utilize, and evaluate knowledge.
7. Provide feedback — Reinforce knowledge with immediate feedback (informative, remedial, corrective, etc.)
8. Assess performance—Test their knowledge with established (and transparent) criteria.
9. Enhance retention and transfer to the job — Use content retention strategies (concept maps, rephrasing, summarizing, job aids, etc.

I suppose you can make some comment on the photos which students post in the Wechat group during the lesson so that students can make a better understanding about the photography skills.
回复删除My first impression is that "Oops! You choose such a subjective topic!".After learning,I get much practical knowledge especially the camera network setting.

回复删除Quite an interesting topic! It was practical and could relate to learners of all ages. Your mini e-learning activity was well-organised and met your learning objectives. What I like most about your teaching plan, is that you gave an in-depth analysis of the design strategies applied; ADDIE Model, Bloom’s Taxonomy, ARCS Model of Motivation and Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction. This enhanced my understanding of the strategies you applied in effectively planning your mini e-learning activity. Also, having the mini-quiz was a good idea as it consolidated our understanding of the principles applied in taking good photos.
Thanks for the candy haha. We finally has a group chat for 6024 due to your group activity!
回复删除The teaching plan has shocked me, with all those theories, this blog is really professional.
Also, the course is rather useful, I believe many of our classmates have learnt a lot!
It is a really interesting learning activity. I have now learnt more about how to take nice photos with my iphone.
回复删除It would be even greater if you could introduce how to take stunning photos using mobile phones other than iphone, for example, Sansumg, LG, as after all not all of us are using iPhone (In fact, many of our classmates are using Andriod phones so they have soon lost their interest during the activity). Otherwise, the topic of your learning activity would need to be changed to "How to take a stunning photo with iPhone?
I learned a lot from your group mini course although I got a lower score in the Kahoot haha! I agree with Jasmine's opinion that you can make some comments on the photos which we put on the wechat group~ Thanks for your sharing!
回复删除At first, I found the topic quite interesting and wanted to know more about it. Then I realized that your activity is designed for iPhone users only and I am sorry to say that I soon lost my interest in it. It would be better if your title is more specific (such as 'How to take a stunning photo with iPhone') or you clearly stated this pre-requisite in the introduction.
回复删除Still, I think the tips your group has prepared are legit and useful. Also, your group's analysis is very thorough by using different instructional design models in evaluating the activity, including the Bloom’s Taxonomy, ADDIE Model, ARCS Model of Motivation and Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction. Nice work.
Actually, other mobile phones except iPhone also have the similar functions in camera setting. We were ready to help to you to teach you how to set your phone~ (^_^)
删除I think you all have done a great job of this lesson. All Student were engage and enjoy ! The way you present your class is very clear and focus. thanks !
回复删除Your mini-lesson is well-prepared. You apply what we learnt in this course to design the lesson. You make use of the Bloom’s taxonomy, ADDIE Model, ARCS Model of Motivation and Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction to explain your design. I was engaged in your activities and got the prize of the Kahoot quiz. May be due to the time limit, I expect you can comment on the photos uploaded by the participants. Thank you.
回复删除I like this topic very much and I often use my mobile to take photo. The lesson can provide useful information for the beginners, although sometime it is quite hard to follow your explanation. On the other hand, after finishing the explanation of how to use mobile to take photo, you may introduce to us an application as a tool to make photo effect. There are lot of free apps helping to make photo amazing, then learners can practice and edit the photo simultaneously.
回复删除We would love to do so as well. But as you know, we only got 15 mins. That's why we cannot include too much content inside our lesson! Glad that you like our lesson! Hope you find it useful!
删除I am interested in your topic as I love photo-taking. It is useful as we used ‘We Chat’ to put all the photos in. Sharing was done. Besides, you checked our understanding by using ‘Kahoot!’ at the end of the presentation. The teaching process was designed well. However, if we showed classmates’ work through ‘We Chat’ with explanation, it would be more practical and much better.
回复删除Actually I love the evaluation part most.Because I have mistaken a lot of them!haha! But it doesn't matter, because I revise the knowledge. And this could help me to memorise them for the second time.
回复删除The topic is easy to learning for different people, and the ideas is simple of take photo. The class have more interaction of the event . Overall, the class will good e-learning class for everyone.
回复删除First of all, your mini class is very interesting and engaging, your performance is very good, the content is really useful and thank you for your candy! lol. What's more, your design plan followed a very logical thinking path with various and comprehensive theories that we learned in this course. It is totally an excellent application of knowledge learnt and combine of knowledge and practice. Learned a lot from you.
回复删除Your mini-lecture are very useful to photograph-lover, like me. The contents about how to take a nice photo are imformative with many approaches. Besides, you apply Kahoot to take a instant quiz to assess learners' learning outcome, which is a good assessment method.
