Session3:Digital Narrative

Topic:阿蛋学粤语 Learning Cantonese with Nancy

Target audience: Non Cantonese Speakers Who Want to Learn Cantonese.

>>>Reflection on the development of the video:

The production of this video followed the ADDIE modle:

Analyze:
Based on the awkward situations non-local students in HK often come across, we chose "Learning Cantonese" as our topic. There is the need of learning Cantonese for daily use among those who are mot familiar with Cantonese.
Design:
Inspired by the interesting narrative format of net drama "万万没想到", we agreed the combination of real situation and instruction would make the learning material more engaging. We chose 4 scenario and common conversations, then created the script, which functions as our schedule.
Develop:
We divided the process of develop into scenario shooting, instruction animation producing and subtitle adding. At last we combined the work together and re-edit the work such as adding background music and titles. The develop procedure was clear to follow.
There were difficulties when we develop the video. For example, in a noisy condition, it was hard to record the voice, which required us to recorded the voice separately and added it afterward. However,  it is every member's devotion that contributed to the completed work.

Implementation:
We invited 7 non-Cantonese students in our class to watch this video to learning Cantonese and collect their feedbacks. Here is the link of the survey: http://cn.mikecrm.com/RpGTY10http://cn.mikecrm.com/RpGTY10

Evaluation:
Here is the results of the survey:

As we can see from the results, this video suits the necessary of non-Cantonese speakers. This kind of funny learning resources is beneficial to engage learners into learning and helpful for students to start to learn Cantonses. However, the quality of sound can be improved.

What can be improved:
We found that there were some mistakes in subtitles and explanation part. For improvement,  we can pay more attention the accuracy of content. Also, the feedback reflected that the fluency of the video can be refined.

Angel's reflection:
The ADDIE model can only function as the general guideline, a clear and detailed schedule is necessary.
When making an educational video, we should not only play the role of instructor, we also have to consider the issue from the viewpoint of learners. That help us to create the really needed and engaging learning content

Frances's reflection:

1. The development of the video:

The ADDIE Model is an instructional design framework with a descriptive guideline to use in building effective training or making teaching materials. But, different people would have different understanding, there were sometimes that members showed their different opinions.  Luckily that we have reached a conclusion for "Learning Cantonese" as our topic.

2. What I learnt through the process:
Through this practice, we had a good lesson of how to collaborate as we hold the same goal to fulfill our task, our group members "share alternate views, construct new understandings and develop empathy with others". Through this practice, not only my skill on problem solving, ICT capability and collaboration got enhance but also learnt how to use IT tool by self-directed learning.
This is my first digital video participated into the production process. It is luck of me to join a friendly and energetic team who are willing to share, help and listen to any suggestions, even though I have no experience in video making. The distribution of works is clear (special thanks to our video Directors: Fan and Angel) so the whole activity went on very smoothly (thanks also to our Protagonists: Nancy and Ronald). Although, I was only responsible for writing dialogues, it’s simple but meaningful.  It took me sometime to familiarize myself with the functions of this tool through operating as well as to realize the whole production process of a video making.

  3. The video is very well done. The content is really useful and is presented in a way that helps the audience remember the knowledge easily. But I think the analysis should follow the ADDIE model. Overall, really good job, will you develop episode 2? lol.

    1. Thank you for your appreciation, Iris! I also look forward to be able to participate in next episode. Hope Director Fan & Angel would count me in as my performance was so disappointing.

  4. I think the video is quite fun to watch and I can see your group has made a lot of effort in preparing the video script, filming as well as editing. But I have spotted a few mistakes in the video, e.g. 'demenstration' should be demonstration. It would be better to ask the whole group to review the whole video and spot out any mistakes before deployment:) Also, I think it would be more informative and clear if your group can include a reflection on the development process using ADDIE Model in the blog. Great work guys!

  5. I like this video indeed. As the video is so interesting, it could, for sure, engage the audience throughout the entire video.

Agree with Sharon that the video might need to be reviewed so that the typo could be rectified (though the typo mistakes are rather not important in this video, I would say).

And I have a minor suggestion for the "Cantonese Class" session in the video. As the target audience of this video should be non-local students in HK (mainly English or Mandarin speakers I guess?), it might be better to put the English and Mandarin before Cantonese in the session so that the audiences could know, in the first instance, the meaning of the upcoming sample sentence.

    1. Ahhhhhh! Shuwen, you must be joking. I don't have any talent to act although I have the same name with the famous actor "XuFan". I think I‘m more suitable for the shooting work haha ^.^
      btw, thanks for your like!

  7. An interesting video! You guys have taken the creativity of this activity it to another level. The subtitles were useful and made it easy for me to understand the scenario.

However, I noticed that there were spelling mistakes and the subtitles weren’t accurate. For instance, from 0:48 to 0:52 seconds in the video - ‘9th floor’ is mentioned in spoken Cantonese and the subtitle written traditional/simplified characters, but in the English subtitle ‘9th floor’ isn’t mentioned. Thus, if the inaccuracies in the video are amended, the video would serve as a superb learning tool.

  8. I love this video and it's really useful for Cantonese beginners because the teaching is quite relevant to our daily life. The design is very clear and attractive for audience (it's really impressive that drawing a circle with fingers above dish means paying bill). The scenario setting is very interesting. Thank you for sharing! :)

  9. This video is really funny and I have found some consensus with "A DAN" . As an absolute beginner, it is rather useful for me. I have used the gesture of "Drawing a circle in the air" in the restaurants to pay for bills many times hahaha. The strawberry pronunciation helps me in the dessert shop all the time. Awesome work!

  11. I appreciate the group members participating in taking the video. The video is separated into different parts in our daily life, i.e. greeting, eating, traveling, …. It fits the target audiences who first learn Cantonese. And I like the dialogue of teaching the Cantonese supported by other language. However, I think it should be better focus on one language in either Mandarin to Cantonese or English to Cantonese.

  12. Your digital narrative clearly met your learning targets. It was very attractive and appealing for the target audience. The scenarios you created to introduce the target vocabulary and phrases helped demonstrate when it can be used. By narrowing down on what you wanted to teach, I can see how it has helped your group create a concise video. The subtitles below really helped a lot to make it easier to follow for the target audience. In terms of the ADDIE model, I can see how you have followed the analysis and design phase. In terms of the implementation phase, were you able to implement this video in the real context by showing it to non-Cantonese speakers? It would have been great to have read about their responses towards the video. In addition, the responses received could help provide more insight for the evaluation phase.

    1. Thank you for reminding us with the "evaluation" part. We have asked 7 of our classmates who are non-Cantonese speakers to learn from this video and done a reflection survey but we did not put the result in this blog. But our group did not spend much time on analyzing the results. I agree with you that Evaluation is an important part in learning design and if we have time, we would discuss the responses and make the evaluation part more completed.

  13. The video is fun especially for the three main characters. It is suitable for the learners from the mainland China as subtitles are provided. Learners can pause or repeat what they have watched according to their learning paces. However, some phrases contain different meanings that may not be understood with a situation.

    1. Yes! What you suggested is also the obstacle we faced. We noticed that even same Cantonese may have different meanings in different situations. This is also about the "accuracy" of content which can be improved. But we chose the most common usage in daily conversation to suit the cases in our video. Even though there were mistakes, I think our video have achieved the goal that encourage learners to learn Cantonese. Thanks for your comment! ^ . ^

  15. I like this video very much. Firstly, it shows a problem I may come across, so I am willing to know more about it. Secondly, the background and conversation in the video are humorous, learners won't feel boring when they watch the video. And after every scene, there is a summary of vocabulary. It helps me review the words.
