Advantages:

For teachers:
       1. Guide and engage learners
       2. Explain complex concepts better

Disadvantages:

  1. Not free
  2. Spend much time, especially for new users
  3. Not suitable for a long video
  4. Difficult to realize the simultaneous of audio and video

Suggestions:

  1. Keep it simple; the setting must be clear and logical.
  2. Make it clear; make it clear who you are, what you’re there to say, selective about what information you include.
  3. Keep it short; 1 or 2 minutes long is most effective at keeping students engaged.
  4. Make it memorable; combining audio and visual media, this can draw students into processing ideas deeply. They love scribing and will make their own videos within minutes.  Students will use it for homework or in class to reinforce what they have learnt.
  5. Speak confidently; if you want students to get on board with your story, you need to speak confidently.  Make sure that the language you choose is positive and inspiring, not accidentally negative. For example, ‘this video will make learning much easy!' is far more inspiring than ‘this video will make learning less difficult!’. 
  6. Break complex concepts into understandable chunks; it can draw students into processing ideas deeply, they will love to listen to what you have to talking about  and will never look at that boring subject matter the same again.
  7. Time your elements; sure to think about the time your elements are set to draw at. In order to have a good work, we’d suggest breaking the long text element into 2 or 3 smaller elements. In some cases, very large blocks of text may cause problems.

  5. This is the first time I heard about this video creation tool and thanks for recommending! I particularly like the 'suggestions' part. I think the suggestions are quite useful as they can also be applied when using other video creation tools, not only VideoScribe. Also, point 6 reminds me of a design principle for multimedia instruction that I read in an article - the design principle of segmenting; breaking complex concepts into understandable chunks helps to divide lesson into learner-paced parts. Good tips!

      And I also think teaching in small chunks is a practical method to make the complicated contents easier to be remembered and I heard about sometimes language teachers chunk short words into phrases or sentences for easy understanding.

  7. One of the greatest advantages of this software is that it could somehow simulate the situation of real class, in that someone is really writing or drawing in the video. The motion could indeed keep the attention of the students (which is one of the most important things during teaching!), particularly the junior form ones.

  8. The introductory video was attention-grabbing and the suggestions on the ways to effectively use VideoScribe are useful. I totally agree with your group that the use of this software can support fragmented and distance learning, thus increasing the efficiency of learning for learners.

    Well, this is a software that I will definitely begin to use as part of my teaching methodology.

  10. It is really interesting the animation made by this VideoScribe and I have started to learn how to use it in my job. The application can really attack the learners’ eye. On the other hand, I think the shortages are 1. it can only explain the simple idea, but not a complicated one. 2. Sometime I find that the film plays too fast, then learners are not easy to catch the information effectively. 3. One interesting thing is that I find learners are really enjoy the video, but forget the learning objective or the purpose of playing the video.

  11. I have never heard of Video Scribe before! It is really eye-catching, interesting and easy to use. Thank you so much for recommending this tool for me and I will definitely use it some day!

  12. This group's blog design is quite attractive, which posts their weekly topics very clearly. And their introduction of Videoscribe shows they have critical thinking to this tool because they talk about the comments from the viewpoint of students to illustrate the advantages of this tool, which is quite interesting. It means they not only think the advantages of teacher use but also students' feeling for experiencing this tool. And they give audiences some useful suggestion for consideration. That's quite useful for me.

  13. It is really an interesting tools. The effect of video created is powerful and professional. Students must love it but as a teacher I’m afraid of spending much time to prepare it. Also it is not free.

    1. Yes you're right. Even for me, I have used VideoScribe to create videos for quite a few time, I still feel it's too time-consuming. For the price, its' roughly $300 per month, so again it's not really cheap. But if you have time, you may give it a try with the 30 day free trial to see what kind of video you can create!

  14. I haven’t used Video Scribe before. The video you created was a great display of the different functions and features. It reminds me of Goanimate! I agree with both the advantages and disadvantages listed. I think that it does help present the teaching materials in a creative and more attractive way for students. However, I definitely agree with the timing of the audio and animation. It can be time consuming to get it right! I found your suggestions to be useful in creating videos for students.

  16. ‘VideoScribe’ is fantastic as it can attract students and draw their attention. It helps students to memorize the key learning content. Especially in Mathematics, it can show students the steps of counting clearly with the help of the pictures. However, the videos cannot be too long. The main learning and teaching focus should be introduced and pointed out directly.

  17. VideoScribe is the students (listener) to understand the topic. But teachers (Tutors) should use more time to edit learning resources to application. And the application provide simple ideas and content to listener. Any tools can help you explain topic and ideas that it is best of learning tools.

  18. The VideoScribe really impressed me so much. The tool is powerful to make the knowledge visable in a dynamic and logical way. With the narration, relavant pictures, highlightened key words, and even coversations between speakers and audiences in a informal way, we can learn better.
