about my research experience.
In my junior year, I joined a volunteer club in our faculty called “Science Store”, which aims to teaching primary and secondary school students some extracurricular knowledge to improve their innovation ability.
And I’m a teacher of 3D printing. Every Friday afternoon, my teammates and I went to a primary school (called Wuzhong Road primary school )and a high school (called Zhongguo High School) in Shanghai, Xuhui District to teach students modeling and the operation of 3D printer Here is some
curriculum content.
In the voluntary
teaching process, a new idea came to my mind. We always target to those “normal
students” and try every new technology to promote their education. However, those
disabled children also need these new educational technologies. Why don’t we
try it?
In order to figure out whether 3D printing is useful in the field of special education, we decided to do a research. I applied the fund of innovation project in our school. And teachers were willing to support us.
So, the project began in an organization called Shanghai Huiling mental disability training institution. Research objects were 7 children aging from 15 to 21 with different degree of autism.We collected their performance of 20 classes using video, and then analyzed their changes in behaviors according to Bloom’s taxonomy. And then record in the evaluation scales.
However, only to the very end of the project, we found that it’s hard to measure the changes on children’s cognition from the "outcome scale" in such a short term. There are many problems in this research, such as Insufficient knowledge and pre-research in special education, the choose of research objects and the lack of scientific method to collect and analyze data.
You can see that we can never only learn others’ experience in classroom. Learning by doing is a good way to apply your knowledge into practice. For us learners, the process of research is more important than the outcomes. That’s why our schools encourage us to do individual project.
So, be brave to start your research!
